It gives the characters a clock, a reason to enter dangerous ground, and a clear purpose on the surface. Someone is missing. People are in danger. Jack Mercer is sent into the jungle to get them out. But the deeper I got into the story, the more obvious it became that the rescue was only the first layer. The real story was underneath. That is where the noir element came

The Allure of Gritty Romantic Suspense Romance gets more interesting to me when it costs something. Not just flowers, easy chemistry, and two people finding each other at the perfect time. I like stories where love shows up in the middle of pressure. Where trust has to be earned. Where people are carrying damage, bad choices, old wounds, and responsibilities they can’t simply walk away from. That is the kind of romantic suspense I wanted to write with Ash & Iron. Kat Callahan
